Furry and Fabulous: It’s Pet Appreciation Month!

In honor of national pet month, I am trying to think of the positives my three pets bring to my hectic life.

Dear Pica the cat,
You were my first pet in my adult life. Your need to be right up in my face helps me appreciate personal space. You have helped me learn to appreciate the wonder of sitting on a piece of furniture at my friends’ houses and not getting up coated in fur. You have helped me to realize the urgency of frequent meals.

You love me the most and have been the most accepting of the new baby. For that, I thank you.

Dear Mac the dog,
I married into your life, which you did not particularly like evidenced by your peeing on my jeans while meeting my in-laws for the first time. We’ve come to an understanding now and you show your love by sleeping on top of my feet all night long. You scream like no other dog does when we put you in your kennel. You have a zest for life (and strangers) like no one I have ever met. You help me keep the floors clean by sweeping up all the crumbs raining down from the high chair.

When people find out you’re a Jack Russell, they smile with empathy. But Mac, you bring such crazy energy into our lives!

Dear Ink the cat,

We couldn’t resist your little face when we found out you needed a home. Two years later, you still have the friskiness of a kitten. You have heightened my awareness of my morning oatmeal bowl and encouraged me to do dishes quickly so you’re not tempted to help lick the plates. You are a good car rider and happily sit in your carrier taking in the sights. You are our most talented pet — opening doors on  your own (video) and recently learning to flush the toilet for your own entertainment.

Happy pet month, my three furry friends!

What have your pets taught you?
