Young Variety of Kansas City

Good Works

It's time to take the stage!

December 26, 2011
On February 25, Kansas Citians will have their chance for fifteen minutes of fame on stage at the Midland Theatre, all in support of Variety, The Children’s Charity. It’s the Variety Show of 2012, baby! And yours truly will be one of those brave (and crazy) souls to do so. My talent, you may ask? Well, talking loudly! I will be showcasing my “spokesperson” skills for all to see. Hopefully I can force a few laughs (preferably, not at me!). Do me a favor — check out my fellow competitors, mark your calendars, and click to donate. Here’s a hint: Lauren McCarthy, Lauren McCarthy, Lauren McCarthy! Variety, The Children’s Charity of Greater Kansas City’s ultimate goal is to provide children with the gift of mobility. Discover which ones can sing, dance, make you laugh, or just simply entertain! stage

Hooray for the Holidays

November 17, 2011
It’s time to deck the halls … literally! Join me, 17 local artists, Young Variety members, Kansas City’s Vocalocity, Shawnee Mission East Lancer Dancers, Shawnee Mission East drum-line, Miss Ella, and of course, Santa in the first annual Hooray for Holidays at Mission Farms.

Seventeen local artistis, including my mother, Nancy McCarthy, will donate their works to benefit Variety. This is "Partridge in a Pear Tree," 3 x 4 on canvas. Gorgeous!

Come have a drink with Young Variety of Greater Kansas City at blank burgers+bottles at 5 p.m. Blanc has been kind enough to offer $3 Boulevards and small plate appetizer specials to all Young Variety supporters. After a beverage and burger, Santa and myself will be presenting the adorable and fabulous Miss Ella with a brand new adaptive bike as a part of Variety Children’s Charity’s mission: to assist our children of Kansas City who have physical or mental disabilities and provide them with the most essential need — mobility. In addition, the generous and talented local artists will have their masterpieces unveiled in Mission Farms’ store windows, each of which will be auctioned off at a later date to raise funds for the Variety mission.  (My mother, Nancy McCarthy is one of those talented artists!) And at the end, Ella will help Santa and I flip the switch on the Mission Farms Christmas Tree to kick off this holiday season!

Winning the Race!

Leading the Race!

“Stay off the grass!” Those four words became second nature to me last weekend at the “K,” where we rallied together for a 5K in support of Variety, the Children’s Charity. The only thing that compares to The Royals’ dedication to keeping an immaculate field is the commitment of the nearly 2,000 runners, walkers and strollers who came out bright and early to support a cause near and dear to my heart: helping children. Proceeds from the 5K will benefit Variety, which helps Greater KC kids with disabilities to stay on the move with specialized equipment, such as vans with lifts, adaptive bicycles, wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs, and more. What a great place Kansas City is! We were presented with a check for $50,000 for the kiddos! Thanks to all who came out and sweated the race with us. Stay tuned for more fun events with Young Variety.
