Show me the CARFAX, baby!

January 29, 2010
What is CARFAX? Well, according to the CARFAX site, CARFAX Vehicle History Reports are available on all used cars and light trucks model year 1981 or later. Experian also offers a similiar report called AutoCheck. What do these reports mean to me or you as car shoppers? If you’re shopping for a used vehicle, it may help impact your buying decision. The report can tell you things like: How many owners has this vehicle had? Has it been in a wreck? Has there been any body damage? But there is a lot these reports may be leaving out, too. “I use AutoCheck as a cross reference to CARFAX; making sure the information is the same,” said Randy Crowell, Used Car Manager at McCarthy-Morse Chevrolet. “CARFAX is only as accurate as what is reported to it. That is why, as a company, we perform inspections on all of our used vehicles before putting them on the lot to sell to our customers.” What is your take on CARFAX or AutoCheck? Do you trust these reports? Has one ever influenced your decision to buy a certain car? I’d love to hear your story in the comments.
