What was your first?

Henry took his first real crawls this weekend, changing our reality in a flash. Gone are the days of setting him in the middle of the floor to play with a nice pile of Tupperware and a wooden spoon. Hello baby gates and outlet covers.

Soon he’ll be walking. Then running. Then driving! Yikes.

My first car was a 1980-something blue Chrysler LeBaron, hatchback and all. This underwhelming ride had power windows which was a little ahead of its time. Unfortunately, they got stuck shut so I had to actually open my door to pick up something at a drive-thru window.

At age 16, my parents took me to the bank to put money in a CD. A year later I had enough to pay for half the car – $900. Much to my dismay, I also learned that car insurance isn’t cheap and has to be paid every six months.

Henry won’t be getting a car for his 16th birthday, or any other birthday for that matter. He’ll have to save his money (better start now, kid) and pay for at least half of a safe, very used car. Then he’ll get to be that kid that parks next to the shiny new cars in the high school parking lot and shakes his head in disgust. And when he comes home complaining, I’ll explain it’s Grandma’s fault.

What was your first car?

LWTK’s mommy blogger, Sarah, is attempting to be a good mama to little Henry, wife to Shea, full-time employee and part-time grad student all while avoiding making dinner from a box every night. In her non-existent free time, she’s running, eating popcorn and blogging about it all at The Gatsby Diaries.
